British Citizenship

There are many different ways to become a British citizen. Our direct access immigration barristers have detailed knowledge and experience of the naturalisation and registration processes that can lead to citizenship.

British Citizenship: Naturalisation & Registration

If you want to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen, you can only apply if:

  • You are 18 or over, of sound mind and good character;
  • You will continue to live in the UK; and,
  • Have met the life in the UK and knowledge of English requirements.

As well as these basic eligibility criteria, there are a range of other criteria including that you have lived in the UK for a continuous period (usually five years) before applying for citizenship, been granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK or have permanent residence and have not broken any of the UK’s immigration laws.  There are detailed rules on the level of permitted absences from the UK during the five year period.

It is also possible to register as a British citizen in certain circumstances. This procedure can be simpler than going through the naturalisation process.
